Whitefield Community Primary School

Meet the Governors
What is the role of the Governing Body?

The Governing Body is responsible for the strategic management of the school. This includes appointing the Headteacher and are involved in interviewing other school staff. The governors are responsible and accountable for ensuring that the school discharges their statutory duties under the law. They ensure that the leadership and management of the school has appropriate plans and resources in place to deliver a high quality and effective learning experience for the children at Whitefield, whatever their ages and ability, so that every child can achieve his or her full potential.

The Governing Body also acts as a ‘critical friend’, monitoring performance & attainment, budgets and the premises, all to ensure that the schools are providing an effective education for our children.

What are Governors?

Governors are like a Board of Directors and make decisions about how the
school is run. They meet at school at least once a term. They are an integral
part of the Management structure, working closely with staff and parents to
ensure Whitefield Community Primary continues to provide the best
opportunities for learners.

Governors are appointed to help:
  • Decide what is taught;
  • Ensure the school delivers a broad and balanced curriculum;
  • Set standards of behaviours.
School Governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities:
  • They can only act together;
  • They cannot act individually;
  • They submit a report to parents annually;
  • A meeting is held at which the report is discussed.

Ofsted said:

"Staff enjoy working at the school. They are supported well by leaders who they believe value their contributions to the school’s success. Governors share school leaders’ ambitions for all pupils. Staff are appreciative of the checks that leaders and governors make on their workload and well-being."

At Whitefield we are committed to having a Governing Body which is diverse and represents the voices of the community we serve.
